1. Deactivate Azure AD Join
In order to fix Something went wrong Azure AD Join error, users are suggesting to disable Azure AD Join altogether. To do that, follow these steps:
- In your browser, go on the Azure portal.
- Log in with your user account into your Azure Active Directory tenant with the minimum of Global Administrator rights. Do a multi-factor verification if asked to.
- Click on Azure Active Directory from the left pane.
- Navigate to Devices.
- In the Devices window, click on Device Settings.
- Set User may join devices to Azure AD option to None. Note that this will apply to all Windows 10 based devices
- Now set User may register their devices with Azure AD to None. This will deactivate Azure-based Workplace Join for Android and iOS devices.
- Press Save and close the browser.
With this method, you won’t have to tamper with the settings yet. Take note that in Azure AD Connect, the two aforementioned options aren’t related to device synchronization.
2. Allow users to join their devices
In some organizations, admins make use of their own account to manage Azure AD Join devices. With this, they bypass the default BYOD conduct of local admin rights to the user account. In truth, the admin is the only one with local administrator rights on all other devices, but this breaks the process in organizations that make use of Microsoft Intune.
However, every feature, product, and technology by Microsoft is utilized in different methods that were not planned by Microsoft, and this is not a feature you would want to abuse. So, always make sure you allow users to join their devices with their own accounts whenever you want to leverage Azure AD Join.
3. Increase the device limit
It is possible for you to increase the Azure AD Join device limit, and by doing so fix the Something went wrong error in Azure AD Join.
- Go to your browser and navigate to Azure portal.
- Log in with your user account into your Azure Active Directory tenant with the minimum of Global Administrator rights.
- Navigate to Azure Active Directory from the left side.
- Head over to the Devices > Device Settings.
- Set Maximum number of devices per use to a desired value.
- Click on Save and exit the browser.
4. Delete some device for the person experiencing the error
To resolve Something went wrong error in Azure AD Join, try to delete some devices from Azure AD for the person experiencing the error. A user cannot manage their Azure AD-joined device by themselves. All you need to do is to channel your BOFH and delete some devices a user no longer needs.
Follow this guide:
- Open Azure portal and log in with your user account into your Azure Active Directory tenant with Global Administrator rights.
- Click on Azure Active Directory > Devices
- Search for the name on the top bar.
- Randomly select a device, click on the 3 dots at the end of the line and select Delete from the menu.
- Exit browser.
