1. Restart your PC

3. Change your Email Account Password

Some users have reported that changing their Live / Outlook account password stopped the spam emails from the spammers. Check your email account’s Sent Item folder and see if any unknown email has been sent.

If sent, you may need to change your email account password to be on the safer side. Here is how to change your outlook account password.

  • Go to Live Password Reset page.
  • Enter your email address and click Next.
  • Microsoft will ask you to verify your identity. You can either use your backup email to receive the confirmation code or use your mobile number to get a text.

4. Disable Automatic Reply for your account

If you have setup Automatic reply for your account, it may result in the delivery status notification failure message. Try to disable automatic reply for your account and see if that resolves the error. Here is how to do it.

  • Log in to your Outlook account.
  • Click on the Settings icon (cog icon)
  • Click on View all Outlook Settings.
  • Go to Mail tab and select Automatic Replies option.
  • On the right-pane, you can see the Automatic replies as on. Toggle the switch to turn off Automatic replies for your Outlook account.
  • Click the Save button (on top) and exit the settings page.

5. Temporary Issue

If none of the above solutions is working, it may be a problem at the Microsoft or the email service provider’s end if you are using any other email service provider.

The best you can do here is to wait for a couple of hours and check for any improvements. If the issue is not resolved, contact Microsoft support on their community forum. The support staff should be able to help you to resolve the error if it is from their end.

6. Other Causes to Consider

Check for an incorrect email address – You may receive delivery status notification failure error in case the recipient’s email address is incorrect. This is among the most common cause of this error, but under-reported. Make sure the recipient’s email address is correct before taking other measures.

Unavailability of the server – This is mostly the case with self-hosted custom domain email addresses. If the forwarding server is down for maintenance or other reason, your emails may bounce back resulting in an error.

Check for large attachments – Check your email for large attachments. While your email service provider may support large email attachments, the recipient’s email service provider may have set limitations on attachments. Check with the recipient for any such limitations.
